Dr. Elaine Borawski is New President-Elect of AAHB

Elaine A. Borawski, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University Center School of Medicine was recently elected as President-Elect of the American Academy of Health Behavior, with her term beginning with the 2011 meeting in Tucson.  

Dr. Borawski is also the Director of the  Case Western Reserve University Center for Health Promotion Research and PI/Co-Director of the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods. Trained as a medical sociologist, with postdoctoral training in public health and epidemiology, she has nearly 20 years of experience in community-based health research with a focus on school and neighborhood level interventions, health behavior surveillance, and survey development and design. Her research, supported by federal (NIH, CDC), state and local agencies, has been awarded over $8 million over the past 12 years.

Elaine has been a member of AAHB since 2001. She initially joined the AAHB Board in 2007 as an ad hoc member for Member Inclusion and then was elected to the Board as Delegate in 2008. She also serves on the Marketing and Communication Committee. In these roles, she has worked with the Board to broaden Academy activities to involve more members, has been responsible for the redesign and expansion of the AAHB website and developing standardized electronic protocols for members interaction with the web, and conducting the annual meeting evaluations.

Dr. Dong-Chul Seo

Elected Delegate

Dr. Dong-Chul Seo was elected to serve as Delegate for a 3-year term on the AAHB Board of Directors. Dong-Chul has served on the Professional Development Council and he chaired the 2009 Research Review Committee (abstract review process for our annual meeting).


Dr. Seo is Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Health Science at Indiana University. He worked as an evaluation expert for the Korean government for more than 10 years before he joined Indiana University in 2004. Dong-Chul’s current research interests include policy and socio-ecological approaches in addictive/ risky behavior and obesity. Since 2004, he has authored or co-authored 42 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He teaches multivariate statistics and has received the Trustees Teaching Award four times (2006-2009) at Indiana University.

Joanne Sommers Joins AAHB

as Executive Director

In July, Ms. Joanne Sommers joined the AAHB as the new Executive Director.   Joanne has a BA in Community Health from Purdue University and a MEd from the University of Toledo in Health Fitness & Cardiac Rehabilitation. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist. 

Joanne is currently a part-time Instructor at Bowling Green State University, teaching Family and Consumer Sciences & Public Health courses for over 10 years. Joanne is married (to Eric) and has two children. Her hobbies include  watching both children play basketball, traveling, and anything outdoors!

Diane Abatemarco, Ph.D., MSSW

Fills Delegate Slot

Dr. Diane Abatemarco was appointed to serve as Delegate for 2010-2011, filling the slot vacated by Elaine Borawski who was elected President-Elect.  Dr. Abatemarco is an Associate Professor and Director of Doctoral Programs at Jefferson University's School of Population Health in Philadelphia.
